In November 2017 Avon Archaeology Limited were commissioned by Discover DeCrypt to lead the archaeological work required during the ambitious renovation project of the St Mary de Crypt Church and School Room, located on Southgate Street in central Gloucester. The renovation work aims to transform and renovate the buildings into a community facility where the public will be able to explore the fascinating history of the church, attend concerts and simply enjoy this great building. During 2016, we were commissioned to carry out a watching brief on land near to Portal Road, Monmouthshire, South Wales related to the development of a new Premier Inn. The town of Monmouth has its origins in the early Roman period with the construction of a fort in circa 55AD. Identified by name as ‘Blestium’, it was one of several forts forming a line of auxiliary fortifications established to control the Monow Valley into mid-Wales.
